🧨Ep. 229: Favorite Books in our PC & Josh Commits Comic Book Violence

TL;DR

This week, the Cannon went completely off the rails. Josh declared war on Noury Jordan by committing an act of "comic book violence" live on air. James Gunn updated The Batman 2 (AGAIN), the Punisher's is confirmed to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the crew showcased the absolute favorite comic from their personal collections. Also, we're taking next week off, so read this carefully!

This week's issue was a Bronze Age banger from November 1974, featuring Thor in an explosive showdown with the former Herald of Galactus, Fire Lord. But as Joe pointed out, the real treasure is inside: this issue contains a Marvel ad for Incredible Hulk #181, which was released the very same week, making it a super cool and affordable piece of Wolverine-adjacent history.

News & Rumors

Josh brought the heat with a slate of news that shook the industry.

  • The DC Update: 

    • James Gunn confirmed that Matt Reeves is expected to turn in the script for The Batman Part Two this month and said to "let the man cook".

    • Gunn also revealed that Tom Harris has been cast as Clayface in a film that will be a hard R-rated horror flick.

  • Marvel/DC Crossovers Return: New creative teams and pairings were announced, including Daredevil & Green Arrow by Kevin Smith and Andy Kubert!

  • The Punisher is BACK: We called it! Jon Bernthal is officially confirmed to appear as The Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

  • X-Men Gets a Director: The director of New Avengers is officially taking the helm for the new X-Men movie.

  • Rumors: The rumor mill is churning with talk of a Deathstroke and Bane team-up movie, a new Jessica Jonesproject, and a strategic shift for the MCU to focus on street-level stories for Disney+ and event-level stories for theaters.

SPECIAL SEGMENT: The Crew's Favorite Comics

We pulled back the curtain and showed off the single most prized comic from each of our personal collections.

  • Josh: After committing ritual sacrifice on a (thankfully fake) Thunderbolts #1, he showed his real prize: a gorgeous 5.0 slab of Batman #181, the first appearance of Poison Ivy.

  • Naomi: Her stunning Absolute Batman: Hush Ashcan, a rare pre-print edition of a modern classic.

  • Dan: His beautiful copy of Fantastic Four #3 (first appearance of the team in costume), which he had Stan Lee sign for him personally at a convention years ago.

  • Jeff: His slabbed copy of Amazing Spider-Man #96, the landmark drug-abuse issue, also signed by the legendary Stan Lee from when they worked together.

  • Joe: A grail found through the "thrill of the hunt"—a Detective Comics #68, the first cover appearance of Two-Face, that he tracked down from a tip at a flea market.

RULING FROM THE BENCH

Judge Dan's Ruling: Iron Man #225

Judge Dan dropped a killer spec play. With the Armor Wars movie officially canceled, the value of its source material, starting with Iron Man #225, has dropped significantly. His ruling: with Disney having invested so much time and money already, a revival is likely. Now is the perfect time to buy the dip on this classic storyline while it's affordable.

Naomi's Pick: Absolute Martian Manhunter #4

Live and back from vacation, Naomi picked Absolute Martian Manhunter #4. She described the series as a phenomenal, trippy, and conceptual ride where the hero is hallucinating as a Martian slowly materializes. If you're not reading it, you're missing out on one of the most unique books on the shelf.

  • This Week's Winner: Congratulations to Raising Elm! His submission of Dark Honor, a unique indie book set during the COVID-19 pandemic, took the win. He'll now face off against Spud's Comics (Lexi) in the semi-finals!

  • The Beef: The biggest #FFTCS story was Noury Jordan declaring war on Josh for his "comic book violence," a moment we will cherish forever.
